Angela (aka Grandma) turned the big 5-0 this week, so we celebrated with a surprise party last Saturday night. Well, almost surprise party. She was suspicious of us already, but the torrential downpour that occurred a few minutes before she was set to arrive left us with a few too many cars in the driveway. Originally everyone was supposed to be there at 5:30 and park down the street at my mom's house, and Grandma was coming at 6, under the assumption that we were just grilling out at our house. Anyway, she arrived right on time and was greeted by a houseful of rain soaked guests yelling "SURPRISE!"
Everything had to be pink, which is her favorite color. Mia and I began decorating earlier that week, and she informed me that she needed to use most of our decorations in her room once the party was over. We "borrowed" a few photo albums from Grandma's house and also her baby book from Meme, and strung pics around the cake and also placed some around the house. The kids loved seeing Grandma when she was a kid. Heather Foster, of Gourmet Gal Cakes did the cake and it was exactly what we wanted. It matched all of our decor perfectly! If you're local (Shoals area) and in need of a cake, she is the one to hire! Sue Plaxco did all of the food and it was phenomenal as usual. There were chicken salad sandwiches, pigs-in-a-blanket, spinach dip, poolside dip (a mixture of cream cheese, jalapenos, green olives, corn, and I forget what else, but it was so good), fruit trays, strawberry cupcakes, and m&m cookies. We also ordered pink candy for the pink candy "bar" which we set up in the dining room.
I think Grandma had a good time, even though the kids kept teasing her about her age! She works so much and is always doing for others, so I was very glad that we got to do something fun for her for a change. Happy Birthday Grandma!

make their mess eat outside!
